The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said Thursday two men were facing impaired driving charges in a case in which one of them is accused of stealing the other’s car outside a downtown St. John’s bank machine.
Police said a man stopped outside a bank early Thursday on Water Street to get some cash, but left his keys in the car.
While he was inside, the RNC said, another man got in the car and drove away with it.
A taxi driver, however, saw that man driving poorly and contacted police, who soon caught up with the stolen car. The man found inside the vehicle is expected to appear in provincial court in St. John’s on theft and impaired driving charges.
Meanwhile, a security guard at the bank thought that the first man appeared to be drunk, and he also contacted police.
The RNC tracked the man to his home, where they also charged him with impaired driving.
