TTC: Provides Customers with Option of Buying Metropasses with Credit Cards

Update:

November, 2012 TTC Metropass - Metropasses can now be purchased by credit cards at 28 subway locations, as opposed to the previous 4 locations. TTC must now expand this choice for 1.5 riders to Pass Vending Machines at 32 locations across the city.

It is difficult to imagine a transit system the size of the Toronto Transit Commission only accepting cash, as a means of currency, but the TTC stubbornly held onto this practice since it’s inception in the 1920’s.  Cash only – isn’t practical and is certainly not in keeping with the times.  Even Canadian Tire accepts credit cards, along with taxi’s for a single fare.

Up to the summer of 2012, there were only 4 TTC stations that accepted debit and credit cards for the purchase of the $126 Metropass. Another 4 only accepted debit cards to purchase Metropasses. Those 8 subway stations sold for approximately 25% of all the TTC’s Monthly Metropasses.

Metropasses are available for sale on the 24th of the month prior at Collector Booths and Authorized TTC Fare Media Sellers. You can buy a Metropass from the 24th day of the prior month until the fourth working day of the month for which the pass will be used (available until the 15th of the month at Davisville and Bloor-Yonge stations).

In the summer of 2012, the TTC announced that they would begin to dispense metropasses at Pass Vending Machines (at 32 locations, but only with debit – again, cash directly from your chequing or savings account at your financial institution.  That announcement was huge and people began to speculate that the TTC was finally, although with a great deal of reluctance, entering into the 21 century with aligned with almost every other business in our society.

Now, it appears that the TTC which has been lagging behind almost every other transit system in the world, wants to play catch-up, in a hurry.

They have announced that Metro passes can be purchased at collector booths at 28 TTC subway locations, via credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express).

It is good to know, that the TTC, although kicking and screaming all the way in the 21st Century, has decided to provide its riders more options as to the payment for their monthly metropasses.

The 1.5 million TTC rider's that purchase monthly metropasses, should have the flexibility to purchase their metropasses at one of the 32 pass vending machine (as shown above) versus having to line-up at one of 28 collector's booths, which may or may not be staffed by a collector on duty.

The TTC may consider providing their 1.5 million (and increasing annually) riders with an option of purchasing the monthly metropasses at the Pass Vending Machines with a credit card, as opposed to forcing riders to line up at a collector’s booth.

It is difficult to purchase a metropass from a collector's booth, when there is no collector on duty
