ORNGE air ambulance helicopters at the Toronto Island airport were out of commission for nearly 320 hours from February to mid-April, documents obtained by the Progressive Conservatives show.
The out-of-service reports do not indicate what the reasons are for the downtime but PC MPP Frank Klees said Tuesday it is “scandalous” these helicopters continue to be grounded and can’t respond to emergencies.
ORNGE spokeswoman Jennifer Tracey said the Toronto base has four aircraft and two are in service.
Health Minister Deb Matthews defended ORNGE, saying it is increasing its staff levels and has improved service since the government imposed changes.
ORNGE has 10 more paramedics working now than a year ago, she said.
“We have 69 helicopter pilots; we’ve recently hired five more, bringing the total to 74 in July … This is good news. This is movement in the right direction. I know it’s not good news for the member opposite, but it sure is good news for the people of Ontario,” Matthews said.
Some ORNGE staff are frustrated because they say nothing is getting better at the agency since the board was replaced and senior management fired, said Klees.
Those changes occurred after a series of Star investigations into questionable contracts, odd real estate deals and the creation of a web of for-profit companies. A legislative probe looking into ORNGE continues Wednesday.
