Ontario Government Helping Newcomers Settle More Easily

A new agreement between Ontario and Australia will allow new residents to exchange their valid driver’s licence upon relocation, without having to take a knowledge or road test.

Reciprocal drivers’ licence agreements are signed once a stringent review has determined that each system provides the necessary skills and abilities to safely operate a vehicle on one another’s roads. Drivers still need to meet vision and medical standards.

Partnerships such as these reduce unnecessary testing and delay for new residents, while keeping the roads safe for everyone.

  • The reciprocal drivers’ licence exchange agreement with Australia begins on January 25, 2010.
  • Ontario has reciprocal driver’s licence exchange agreements with Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, the United States and all Canadian jurisdictions.
  • Ontario expects that each year 375 new residents from Australia will exchange their driver’s licence in Ontario.

“I am pleased that Australians living in Ontario are now able to exchange their Australian driver’s licence for an Ontario licence in an easy, straightforward manner. This agreement will make it easier for skilled personnel to move between Australia and Canada and improve commercial links between our two countries. I am hopeful we will be able to conclude similar agreements on the recognition of driver’s licences with other Canadian provinces, so that all Australians and Australian businesses operating in Canada can benefit.”

The Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Ontario's Minister of Transportation. The reciprocal drivers' licence exchange agreement between Ontario and Australia begins on January 25, 2010.

These are Kathleen Wynne’s, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, comments regarding this  new reciprocal agreement:

“When you are new to a country, getting settled in as quickly as possible is very important. Reciprocal drivers’ licence agreements reduce delay and inconvenience while ensuring drivers have the skills and experience they need to drive safely on our roads.”
