Update:

To avoid a large property tax increase in 2012, Mississauga’s budget committee approved two changes to transit Wednesday.

Next year, the city will eliminate eight routes across Mississauga, saving $840,000. None of the routes met the city’s minimum rider threshold. And in January, fares will increase for MiWay riders to $3.25 from $3. The increase will generate $1.1 million in revenue for 2012.

The city had estimated earlier in the summer that the 2012 transit budget would have needed an 8 per cent increase over 2011. Mississauga is trying to avoid another large increase in its portion of the property tax bill for 2012, after a 5.8 per cent increase this year.
